Hi,
We are new to the chicken world. I live on 4 acres of land with my husband our four children and several furry pets as well as one scaly one, no not my husband LOL! I have been begging my husband since we moved here (two years ago) for some chickens, he would just roll his eyes and grunt, which meanss no. So when the kids asked me what I wanted for Mothers Day, I said chickens and he said YES! you could have knocked me over with a feather, get it feather, hee hee. So before he could say no I rushed to the computer and ordered the coop plans. This weekend they are having a flock swap and we are going to look for some babies. My kids and I are so excited. Even my husband is happy since he gets to build something. He is a pretty good carpenter. I figure by the time our new babies get feathers the coop will be ready. If not I will have to come up with plan B.

I do have a couple of questions for you experienced chicken people. What are the best chickens for children? My kids are 5 and up and very gentle. We have always told them to be nice to all living things. We would like a variety of chickens, ones that are gentle but will give us some eggs now and then. Hens only, no roosters for us. We are planning on getting six hens, but are building a large coop in case we want to expand in the future.

Also we are setting up the housing for our forthcoming chicks, but what do i put down as flooring? Some articles say newspaper, some say wood shavings.

This site has been so helpful to me. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance for any help you may have for me.

Hello and :welcome
Loved your introduction, very funny.

Buff Orpingtons are a very friendly breed which are good with kids. For your chicks, most people recommend wood shavings, but if you don't have that newspaper will do for older chicks (in younger ones it may cause issues with legs).

Glad to have you onboard, and hope to see you round the forum! :frow

Hi and

Good luck with you new chicks! They are so much fun to raise! I suggest welsummers as well, mine are so friendly, I hand feed them everyday and they wait for me to come home and get so excited when they see me, lol. Glad you joined!
