Hello everybody. No chickens yet, but I plan on some bantam silkies as soon as I get some land. Eventually I'd like to get some game birds as well, and from what I understand silkies are very good for hatching eggs. Every time I do any research online a topic from this forum appears in my Google results, so I thought I may as well create a profile. :)
 
Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join us. Silkies are very good brooders and mothers. We used to have some Black Silkie hens, and they hatched several broods for us. Silkies also have a wonderful temperament; very sweet and gentle. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

The only problem I have with game hens is that I hear they tend to be aggressive.

I did have a question, and it might sound stupid: do bantams breed with regular sized chickens? So, if I wanted to have normal-sized birds for eating and bantams for brooding quail, etc, do I need to keep the two flocks separate?

There no such thing as a stupid question. The only stupid question is the question that was not asked that should have been asked. :eek:) In answer to your good question, yes, bantams will breed with normal-sized birds, so if you don't want them interbreeding, you will have to keep the two flocks separate. If you don't want a separate bantam flock or have a place for a separate flock, I would recommend getting standard-sized Cochins to do your brooding. They are not very good layers, but they are very calm and gentle, and very good brooders and mothers (not quite Silkie level, but no other chicken is quite Silkie level when it comes to brooding).
