Thanks for all of the advice - I've been vacillating between Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpingtons, and EE's.
I keep seeing conflicting info on laying, but all seem to have fairly calm personalities and would possibly make a good mixed flock.
I wanted something that might hatch its own chicks at some point, and the EE's don't seem good for that. But the BO's and SS's have such conflicting egg-laying information (some sources call either one "average" and the other one "prolific", and then vice-versa on another site!!!
) I can't decide. So I thought maybe some of each?
We are planning on about 2 dozen chicks, but we could probably handle up to 30 or so with our size coop that we are building (I don't do anything half-way ha ha!).
So maybe 10 of each?
