Hello just joined Backyard Chickens, from northern Ontario. New to chickens and find the information on the site a great source of information. Lots of informative articles from some obviously very passionate contributors. Our plan is to start slow and once the weather get a little warmer, start building our coop, hopefully adding chickens by next spring. So, lots of time to check things out and do it right. Looking at a small flock of six to seven chickens and possibly a rooster. Which leads me to my question. Other than fertilized eggs are there any other advantages to having a rooster?
 
NO. Can't think of any. Roosters may sound the alarm if predators are sighted but, they'll probably be the first to be eaten. Lots of people are going without them and their hens are much less stressed because of that.

I don't have a rooster but other than fertile eggs, the main reason I'd want one is that they are so darned impressive looking and I like their crowing. But my girls lay just fine and I don't have to be concerned about them being over-bred. And I don't have to figure out what to do with any little males that hatch out of the fertile eggs.
