New from the thumb of WV

Hello and welcome from a fellow mountaineer! I started my first flock of egg layers last spring. So far I’ve been most impressed with my midnight majestic Marans. They were from a hatchery. From what I understand they use copper maran roosters with barred rock hens to get this breed. They have handled the summer and winter so far the best. They lay well, I’m still getting beautiful dark brown eggs everday, but they are still young so I suppose that will slow down later. I had to make a large enough covered run they could stay in full time. 1/2” gage wire to keep weasels out. I don’t have to worry about bears much where I am so I hope someone who does can tell you what you need for them. So many things want to eat my chickens here! I do let them out in the yard supervised but I literally chase hawks off when I do. I built a solid coop with two latches for the door and pop door because raccoons are a real problem. They can work latches. Best wishes to you!
