Hello BYC friends! My name is Kara and I got into chickens May of last year when my we found 4 roosters in our hay barn. We started feeding them but left them as free range. Over the course of a couple weeks, three of the four vanished which left me whith, what I believe to be a Gold Star rooster or something similar to that breed. I named him Whiski and he decided to make a home here. We felt he was lonely so we were given a black sex link"?" hen as well as her 5 teenage daughters. We named them: Momma Hen, Eenie, Meenie, Minie, Moe, and Little Hen. Over the summer, Momma hen hatched out 18 babies out of 19 eggs. Then 4 of her daughters also hatched out babies. 15, 12, 10, and 2 (yes, 2). I believe about 75% or more of my chicks survived over the summer, fall, winter and that was having them free ranged most of the time. We built our coop/run late last fall. I didn't expect Whiski to do such a good job at reproducing so we now have the chickens we have left (7 adults... 2012 offspring: 6 young adults, and 20 or so babies ranging from 1 to 4 months). Once I can get pictures to load from my phone, I will post pictures :)

Glad you joined us!

Thank you for the warm welcome :) Whiski, Momma Hen, Eenie, Meenie, Minie, Moe, Little Hen, Angel, Babe, Blondie, and all the babies can't wait for Elmer and myself to take in all tthe info and ideas from fellow chickeneers. And even Evil, Rum, and Royal say thank you even though those 3 roosters are for sale ;-)

I was able to get a head count on the babies this morning and I have 21 babies including my injured baby by himself in a dog crate. Once I see their personalities more and their sex's, I will work on names for them...lol. might take me awhile. I actually just named the 3 roosters I'm selling. All three are mean to my hens so I thought their names were fitting. Evil is the meanest to my girls, Rum (the drink) makes me fiesty and that rooster is fiesty, and Royal is so beautiful with his black, deep blue, purple and green feathers and was the one I wanted to keep until I saw him being mean to the girls as well.
