Hello BYC friends! My name is Kara and I got into chickens May of last year when my we found 4 roosters in our hay barn. We started feeding them but left them as free range. Over the course of a couple weeks, three of the four vanished which left me whith, what I believe to be a Gold Star rooster or something similar to that breed. I named him Whiski and he decided to make a home here. We felt he was lonely so we were given a black sex link"?" hen as well as her 5 teenage daughters. We named them: Momma Hen, Eenie, Meenie, Minie, Moe, and Little Hen. Over the summer, Momma hen hatched out 18 babies out of 19 eggs. Then 4 of her daughters also hatched out babies. 15, 12, 10, and 2 (yes, 2). I believe about 75% or more of my chicks survived over the summer, fall, winter and that was having them free ranged most of the time. We built our coop/run late last fall. I didn't expect Whiski to do such a good job at reproducing so we now have the chickens we have left (7 adults... 2012 offspring: 6 young adults, and 20 or so babies ranging from 1 to 4 months). Once I can get pictures to load from my phone, I will post pictures
