G’day fellow chicken lovers. I have had chicks now for a little over 2 weeks and have been visiting this website for a few months now. It has been a great resource! There is a great wealth of expertise to be found. So, thanks :)

I live in the suburbs of Perth, Australia and wanted a small mixed flock of three for eggs and unpaid garden work. After researching what breeds to get I have developed a great interest in chooks and if I had more land I would have several flocks. Only choosing three was very hard and in the end it was a result of what was available at the time of purchase.

I have 6 babes, 2 lavender araucanas (technically easter eggers as pure araucanas are an exceptionally rare breed in Australia), 2 light sussex, one barred rock and one silver laced Wyandotte. I am crossing all fingers and toes that the rock and the Wyandotte are girls!! They were top of the wish list.

Adventures and trials to date: The EEs could fly a little from day 1. One flew out of the box on the front seat while I was on the highway driving home from the breeder! We’ve had over a week of 40+ degree (104+ Fahrenheit) temps over Christmas and NYs which meant they had to live it up in luxury inside with the AC on. The sky was falling on the day I discovered their crop and thought it could be a tumour!

And the latest is my littlest darling, the Wyandotte (wynnie) is being picked on by Viola (one of the EEs). So bad I’ve had to segregate Viola and use citrogen on wynnie’s wounds.

All in all I’ve found the experience of raising chickens to be marvellous and surprisingly entertaining. Looking forward to the future and to participating on this website.
