chicken math strikes again!!!!! thanks my wife thought it was just me till i showed her all of the folks with the same multiplacation problems i have lol. by the way ventilation is a biggy also the more air you can have getting the smells out the better i have found that diotamacios earth in the feed and on the floor of the coop is a god send when it comes to flock health and odor

i found your post lol there is sooooo much i want to type. i basically started off in the same position as you. as far as the coop/run goes i used all scrap wood. i only had to buy the wire and it took me 2 weeks of non-stop work but i made it happen. i will take a bunch of picture for you of how i did my coop. maybe you can bite some ideas off from there since you are using scrap wood as well. i improvised A LOT lol but i made it happen with some creative thinking. i did find one major flaw in my design which is an easy fix. another member pointed out that chicken wire can be chewed thru very easily. so i will be putting a more sturdy wire over the chicken wire and that will fix that problem :)

Thanks Allison! All help will be appreciated and I LOVE have pictures of stuff to give me ideas. I already have some moving around in my head. I had already read in some places about the standard chicken wire and have made plans to either reinforce it with a second kind or made use something with smaller holes and sturdier material all together. I want to try my best to keep out predators. Our major predators here in Bama are racoons, foxes and chicken snakes. MY uncle also has chickens but I am trying to do this project "on my own" but I did go look at his pen yesterday. Instead of having a run attached to his coop, he has made a big pen. He has also used scraps of wood, etc to make his pens. He has 2 roos and each roo has about 15 hens in his little group. I am still waiting to see what I have. My retured daddy and I sat down yesterday and looked at some various coops online. I shared some ideas about what I would like. He is very good at building things like that ( he and mother have a rental house that they restored on their own) I would love to hear what made you decide to go into chickens and how it all happened. Would love to have someone to throw ideas off of and share chicken tales. Thanks!

Hooadefender......where do you get that to add to the ground of the coop? DO you think they have it at the co-op or any feed and seed store?
 
yes they should just tell them your looking for food grade DE most of the feed stores around here carry it so they should have it there
 
Hey! I am in Birmingham and this is my first foray into the chicken world too! Mine hatched today--I have 2 Dominickers, 2 Buff Orpingtons, and 2 Light Brahmas....How are yours doing?
