Just recently joined after purchasing 5 acres out in Whatcom County. I've never had chickens before, so I used this site quite a bit to learn where to start. After several months of reading books, magazine, this website, etc., I thought it was time to jump in. So, I'm picking up 10 RIR chicks this weekend.
Luckily, we already had a gigantic "goat pen" and chicken coop on the property. I just needed to make a few modifications to the existing pen and coop to make it more like what I felt it needed to be for chickens. So, my biggest expense was already taken care of.
