New guy here - idea what breed this one is??

So how are American Game hens at laying? Just did a little googling and it looks like they're mostly bred for cockfighting. Doesn't surprise me now, given the origins of the two freebies. :)

I know rhode islands are great layers, so at least I've got that going for me.

Yep game pullet. Now about this other chick that is much darker, are its breast feathers coming in black? If so that may be your roo.

As far as laying goes, they should produce a good amount of eggs but the eggs will be smaller than the RIR's.

Kinda hard to tell, but I don't think so - looks specked if anything. I assumed it was the same breed but it looks so different that maybe it's not?

Anyway, here's a pic of that one:

edit - sorry for the 90degree turn - it looks straight on my computer!

That one looks like a American game too.. Hatch pullet.. As for laying depends, but typically they'll lay about 5-7 medium sized-white eggs a week spring-fall (sometimes earlier/later, depends) unless you let them set. As for the cockfighting remark, they may have been but are now going more towards show fowl, and for some people like me preserving them. A lot of people don't believe there is much use for them anymore, but to me they're better than any other with all of the history involved in them, and personalities/colors.

Sorry -

I didn't mean to be derogatory in any way; I just know there's a lot of underground cockfighting out here. I used to work at a animal feed place and probably half our business was special cockfighting mixes for various customers. :)

No reason to apologize really, I wasn't/am not mad or anything. I assume there probably still are a few that fight them, but they're really going towards the show/breeding circuit. A lot of people don't like to raise them because of the cockfighting issue and tend to attach stigmas to them, which for people like me preserving them is kind of a bad thing. Most of the stigmas are false, and it leads to more people being afraid of them (when they shouldn't be) and we have too much trouble with that already and people trying to make it against the law to even own them.
