New Hampshire - LIVE FREE or DIE

I don't think it has anything to do with TSC, they'd sell you a hot stove if you could wrap your arms around it and carry out. I've heard that this had something to do with curbing the sale of Easter chicks and other give-away chicks that weren't wanted much past their being chicks. I think the wisdom is, that if they (the state or local jurisdiction) make you buy a minimum then you'll be less likely to buy chicks on a whim or b/c they're just so cute. It's attempt to ensure that those who buy chickens really want chickens.

PS...I'm not making any assessment of the validity or wisdom of such regulations. I'm just relating what I had read somewhere.

that makes sense about the easter thing and it rings a bell from a very long time ago.

I like the part about tsc too. I bet you could say that about most stores!

I think that 6 as a minimum is fair for both parties and I think that a local group should organize and work at meeting the needs of all around and listening to everyones concerns . that is what I am doing where I live.

i think thats more reasonable also ( 6 chicks ) and i really dont know how one goes about changing a law. but i think it takes more than 1 person.

here is a plan if everyone calls there local and state reps for the town that they live in in the next 30 days , and post your results on this post. it will come as a collaberative effort from all fronts and the reps will not be alone when the citizens push for change in the rules. please be polite in your requests. if we all work together we can make change happen and if you find a rep that is opposed find out when they are up for re-election , LOL

if only all posts come up for re election

what exactly am i looking to say to my Representative and is their other issues we would like to tackle at the same time?

check your local ordinances in your town and city and decide if as written are they acceptable to you as a chicken owner or are they obsolete and are no longer reasonable and customery to where you live. I think that people that all live in one area should try to get together and discuss issues that they encounter. each area is different. one issue for sure that everyone on BYC in NH wants to see changed is the 12 chick minimum. so make sure that is at the top of your list , it really should be more that one person that approaches local reps as there is strength in numbers and others might bring up an issue that someone has not thought of. good luck !

i think some people will be afraid to turn that rock over in fear that their birds are illegal and that brings on something they dont want to call attention to. what about a petition signed by nh residents that all can copy and take to their reps? since i believe there are 5 people only that i know of in town that care to sell birds

I spoke to Cindy at the Ag office today about he 12 chick rule and was informed that the practice adopted in 1985 was to insure that chicks arrived by mail warm and healthy. Unfortunately it spills over into the rules also for selling and giving away of chicks by personal means or by retail/wholesale practices.

The only way to change this law/ruling is to contact a State Representative and have him draw up a bill of change and have it go before the House and Senate and be written into law.
Specifics could be written in as well as, shipping to remain at 12 chicks but for in state selling such as swaps and store selling could be dropped to a min of 6 chicks.
As I mentioned in the post on the locked thread co-operation and working together will go a long way in changing this law/rule.

my disclaimer here is :
I called to get infomation on somthing else for someone else and asked about the 12 chick rule for a particular bird thankfully it isnt included

This is a non disclosure discussion goto your selectmen meeting and ask for support. it is about mimimum purchasing for the back yard chickeneer

and then the selling issue is already addressed with the poultry license requirement. but I do really think that this is the time for people to understand just how large back yard chickens are. Most people that i talked to have no issue with chickens as long as the roosters are quiet and there is no smell . People that own also have to be good stewards of there chickens. as well as good neighbors. be considerate but utilize your rights to have chickens if you want them
smile.png
and introduce them to others and every now and then give away a few eggs to neighbors. little kids love to get an egg out of the nest. good way to start them out young !
