Does anyone have dutch bantams??? I have not seen any at the swaps or on line. I got eggs from ebay and they were duds! No developement at all! I spoke with a man in mass, but no one in his group were selling anything. Bummer

looking for info about japanese and d'uccle. reading on another thread that they are not winter hardy. wondering what new england people do to get them through the winter. I know that alot of people around here have them. also why do we not see purebred japanese at swaps? are they unpopular? I have seen alot of japanese crosses this season but no pure. I have a pair that I am considering keeping but not if nobody would want chicks. any imput would be appreciated.
 
I kept young DUccles during last winter, I dont have an issue with them at all.
I think the warmth of the other chickens helped.
during the winter I house everyone together to minimise losses to freezing temperatures.
of course no one has pure eggs of a certain breed butin winter they are mainly for eating anyways.

Hey all,
I just got back from the Living History event in Hillsborough NH. I had an 18th century setup with the chickens (repro 18th c. cages and all). I got a lot of good feedback and handed out a lot of flyers to people that are interested. So I am getting the word out there. Sorry I missed Swanzey, see y'all at Merrimack!
 
at what temp would you turn on the heat lamp? last winter I only used them when it was really cold. my coop is very tight and insulated. I have water heaters going when necessary. I also created a heat drum. popcorn tin with lightbulb inside. sort of like backing up to a woodstove. i use low enough wattage so they can sit on top of to keep feet warm.

Lot's of people got pics, but I always feel ridiculous in 18th cewntury dress with a camera. I am sure that our gracious hosts for the event will be sending us pics. Will post if I get any?
