I have this pullet right here in the following images and i dont know wheter she is a Rhode Island red or Newhampshire red? she is about 3 months old now
She is lighter than my other Rhode island reds here are pictures of my two older hens so you guys can compare and they are about 5 months
New Hampshire and RIR are very different! Hatcheries often cross the breeds and when they label anything as a RIR or a New Hamp, they are usually just Production Reds.
A Production Red is a mix created by hatcheries. It's mainly a combination of New Hampshire and RIR. It's just a well laying mix that the hatchery came up with a name for, just like they did with Golden Comets, Black stars and Red stars.
I bought 6 chicks this year (at Easter time) from Tractor Supply, I think they are all just "muts"
2 of them are red (male and female) 2 of them are black (female) and then a Porcelain d`Uccle bantam (male? female? idk...) beautiful white, with some pale blue feathers and feathered feet. 3 months old now and it tried to crow once.
A sebright bantam, another beautiful bird. Again male? female? idk...it has tried to crow a couple of times when the red cockerel crowed, but it was an awful, squeeky little sound. So the only one that I know for sure is male, is the big red one that crows all of the time. When will I know if the bantams are male or female? They are all very protective of each other and DO NOT like being seperated. They free range during the day and all live together at night. The bantams huddle under the wings of the bigger birds (even under the rooster)
Is this living arrangement ok??
