I picked up a NHR roo for a neighbor when I went to get my chickens....He is absolutely gorgeous! He is 23 weeks old and is a gentleman to his owner and his ladies...

This has peeked my interest in the breed.. Do any of you have them? Can you give me the 'low-down' on them?? I would be keeping them for a eggs and eye candy.. Could you post pictures of both the roo and hens???

Thanks a million eggs!

I can tell you that New Hampshires were developed in New Hampshire entirely from Rhode Island Red stock. They were developed with meat qualities in mind.

New Hampshires don't seem to be a big regional breed -- I live in Western Maine and have been keeping my eye out for some New Hampshires but haven't come across anything. Nothing like the impression I get from Buckeyes in Ohio.

I hope to get to a New Hampshire fair or two next month and visit the poultry barns to see if my impression is mistaken.

Well, If you get to any of the fairs, post back and let me know what you found!! Thanks Dixie

I have 10 New Hampshire Red pullets just about ready to start laying. New Hampshire Reds are a very old dual purpose breed that lay large brown eggs. They are on the American Livestock Conservatory list of critical breeds.

They are wonderful. The silly things follow me around the yard....worse than a spoiled dog under your feet. Where ever I am they come find me. They come running to meet me if they hear me come out of the house. They are such gentle natured sweet chickens aside from the fact that they are beautiful ! I love them. I am now searching for a New Hampshire Red rooster for these ladies.

Sorry, I don't have any pics for you. I've had several NHR and I love them! Very friendly and great layers! One thing I really love about them is their color - it's such a beautiful, bright red!!!

I believe they were developed in the early 20th century. So, not really that old.

I had one New hampshire bantam I puchased from a friend. His name was Bob. He was a sweetheart to me. He had a wonderful personality to people, But he hated other roosters, and was only nice to his hens. I loved him. R.I.P Bob.

Admitted to the Standard in 1935. Just a few years before I was born. NOT OLD AT ALL!!!
