New Hampshire!!

Did they use their nest boxes? Or did you find the eggs on the ground? I'm just wondering if they instinctively know to use the nest boxes or will I have to train them to use them. I have the following:
1 Rhode Island Red
1 Buff Orpington
1 Black Australorp
1 Barred Rock
2 Cochin X's 1/2 Cochin 1/2 EE
well since i didn't expect eggs for atleast 5 more weeks, my nesting boxes were still blocked off, the same day i found the first 2 eggs, i had to cut circle holes for access to the 4 nesting boxes and make 3 dividers, it was rushed but its good enough for the chickens. the iftst two eggs i found in the coop near the feeder, but both were next to each other, then the next day one laid an egg in the nesting boxes as i was standing there, then today we got two more eggs in the same nesting box less than an inch from each other, and one of those eggs was a bit bigger than the large eggs we still have from the store! but no if you open the nesting boxes before they are supposed to lay or right after they lay their first egg if they lay early like mine, they will instinctly use it, atleast thats what i have read and what seems to be happening here, they like an area where they can feel secluded and safe and not brightly lit. i hope you have great luck with them!

That is really early, even for pullet eggs. If these are hatchery birds anything is possible I suppose, they are typically bred for production and will only lay for 2, maybe 3, years. Just a note.... If you are switching pellets to pellets, typically it is ok to just switch...however if you are switching from mash to pellets you really should mix pellets with the mash as it can cause intestinal problems if you don't.
yeah very early, they are from tractor supply and yeah i had been useing pellets all along so the switch was seemless for me, and i figured about 3 years so thats ok, but the suspense of waiting for the eggs is now over and im glad because it was killing me, bu tmy birds are really healthy and seem happy, one has claimed my 2 year old son as hers....

yeah on of them def has clung to our son!!!!! its so funny!!!!

My EE girls i hatched this year have been laying every other day since they where 15 weeks old.... my BSL x BR girls have been laying since they where 16 or so weeks....

am i just lucky? none of my hens has taken 20 weeks to start laying eggs.

thats great! i know i was extatic to see mine laying, i was interested in trying 2 easter eggers if you hatch anymore or are willing to part with 2, i really don't want to buy 25 online and my wife likes the plymouth rocks, how do you like your easter eggers? and have you ever had plymouth rocks? it must be awesome to see green and blue eggs.

LOL!! thats what we call them too!!!!! Isis Devilfire, Jasmine, Alpha, Davida, Dundaroo, Penny, Sunshine, Loki, Mistress Featherhead (yes I know), Lyla, Dallas Heavenkiss, Black Velvet and of course our beloved roo shadow! thats the man of the yard unless you count the Buck we also have on the property!
Haha! I love hearing all the chicken names. Here are my current friends, in the hen house: Magrat, Sophie, Jadis, Buffy, Freya, Agnes, Scout, Pickles, Lily, Mabel, Muffy and Elphie. In the rooster pen there's Munin, Eggbert, Stargazer, Breachy, and Susuwatari, plus three others who never got named. In the brooder we have Gladys and Bam Bam, plus about a dozen other chicks who have yet to be named (they only just hatched yesterday, heh, give us a chance to catch up).

Dominiques mostly, and a few Dominique crosses. I fell in love with Doms and I'm slowly transitioning over to an all-Dominique breeding flock. :) And Pickles was named by one of my co-workers, heh! She's a pullet from the spring hatch, my co-workers kept wanting to name the chicks as they hatched. :)

also want to try the easter eggers becuase the blue or green eggs could be really neat, have you had any of those?

I love my Dominiques, they are great for NH too, many of them lay right through the winter. Great foragers, friendly chickens, not too big so they have great feed to egg conversion. Such a great backyard bird. The roosters are a little skinny, as table birds go, but they still taste good. Send me a PM and if I need to part with a few I will remember to let you know.

I've never had easter eggers, but I may have one in the batch of six I just purchased from nhnanna. There's a little zig-zaggy grey and brown chick with feathered legs that is probably a crossbreed, but might have some easter egger in there. We'll see! My neighbors keep the easter eggers because their kids love the colored eggs. :)
