New hatched chicks

Top image is today, bottom one was last Friday. Hatch date for everyone was on or around Jan 20th.

This chick is very very slow to grow and develop feathers. It’s waaay behind its other 42 flock mates.

I’d like to take the heat plate out of the brooder in a few days but I don’t think that will be possible with this little one.

Anyone else hatch one like this and did it eventually end up reaching a normal size/feathering?

I have had a few runts like that. They rarely survive to adulthood, unfortunately.

You should be able to take the heat plate away, though. This one will find a pile of its hatch mates to burrow under.
It’s active, eating and drinking so I’m willing to give it a chance.

And that’s good news about the plate. I’ll take it out to give them more room. I still can’t believe how fast the others are growing!
