I just read in my local paper that Metzer Farms just broke ground on a new hatchery in Memphis, TN, not far from where I live. The hatchery is for waterfowl only. The article said that because FedEx's main hub is here they will be able to ship ducklings and goslings overnight or pick them up here! I am excited.

What breeds? That’s roughly 2 states away from me (VT) I’m not sure what shipping would be like
I have sent eggs to my sister in Michigan using fedex for around $30. The article said they currently ship their ducklings using fedex from CA to Memphis and then around the country. This new hatchery (which is set to open early 2022) would cut half the trip out for ducklings. As a result, healthier ducklings should arrive.

That sounds like a trip that'd be rough on a healthy human. I'm surprised waterfowl hatchlings are able to survive such a trip. This is why I've never ordered waterfowl from a hatchery. This trip just seems like a lot. I know that many survive and thrive in spite of it, but the ones that die breaks my heart

I totally understand but this is also how they get to most feed stores. Last summer my son worked at the main hub for fedex. His job was to hand load irregular shaped or fragile items like ducklings. So, if they are hatched here and then shipped it may not be that bad.

Agreed. This definitely sounds like a better start for waterfowl that are being shipped to this side of the US
