One of my pullets turned out to be a roo. I cannot keep him in the city and am planning on rehoming him. I would like to replace him with a new hen. The question is - is it better to introduce the new hen while he's still around or to wait until he's gone. The roo and my two hens are about 20 weeks old and I've only been able to locate a 7 week old Australorp hen to replace him. The other two hens are a Speckled Sussex and a Blue Cochin.
introducing a single hen is always a crap shoot. Depending on age, space, temperment, etc. Is there any way you can keep her in a separate kennel right next to the other girls until they are at least the same approximate size? The issue of before or after the roo is mute I think. Anyone else?
I would not introduce a single hen I repeat would not. I did it & it was a BBBBBBBBIIIIIIITTTTTTCCCCC. For one thing I intro a single dom to 10 red chickens & 1 red roo big no no. My only saving grace was my roo fell head over heals for her & protected her & still does. Get at least two & make sure their the same color & same size & quarantine. Personally, I won't add newbies. If I want more chickens I start a new flock. But people do it all the time.
