Hi

A new hen(?) we picked up has started climbing on top of our laying hens and pecking at them. We don't know if we have a rooster in the making or a very dominant hen. We have NO interest in having a rooster, so what to do about that (please options that don't include ME culling it, I'm too new at this) would be helpful.

I've included a picture(s) of aforementioned hen. Help!

Oh, and I'd also like some help on the breed (easter egger it may be...just let me know your thoughts, thanks!)

Young Barred Rock Rooster

Edited to add options: Keep it as the flock rooster, sell it, give it away, or make a chicken pot pie.

uh, thanks?!?!

sigh, well I do appreciate the breed name..lol

when do Roosters start making things "fertile"...what age?

Thanks Matt,

Not really up for the chicken pot pie. We are looking to produce eggs, no baby chicks, so keeping it as the "flock rooster" won't help. Guess giving it away comes up next

I know just how popular (not) roosters are.

Since you only have one, you should be able to find him a home. If you can't you may end up giving to someone and just not asking what will happen. There are people I get extra roos from that just want me to NOT tell them anything. They know, but as long as I don't say it ....

Very cool folks you all are.

Matt, if you lived around the corner, that roo would be there already. I definitely can get with the "don't tell me" thing. But honestly, I'd prefer to find it a home.

My Lead Hen is really really mad at me right now. She likes to rule the roost...lol

Anyone local want a Young BR Rooster in good health and feisty? (I live in Phoenix, AZ)
