I traded my rooster for a hen today. Was told she is a Golden Comet...what do you guys think? She has a few issues, but over all looks good. Eyes are clear, she eats well, no missing feathers, poop seems ok. I have her separated from my other chickens. (I'm very new at all this.) I'm pretty sure she has leg mites. The powdery looking stuff on her comb and waddle...favus??? Also a few black spots on her comb. Not sure what that is. Should I be looking for any other issues? Dusted her lightly with DE. I was going to treat her comb and waddle with miconazole just in case it is favus. Headed to the co-op to look for something to treat mites and to worm her just in case she has those too. Any other suggestions?

For the legs, I would slather on vaseline, castor oil or NuStock cream a couple of times a week. This will smother the SLM, if that's what's going on there.

Comb and wattles - I'm not seeing anything concerning. Could be just a bit of dryness. Work a small amount of vaseline into the comb, face and wattles. That's what I do when my bird's combs looks a bit chapped and dry - vaseline seems to sooth and heal and skin doesn't peel.

I would re-check for lice/mites on the body. DE may help if there's no infestation. If you do find any bugs, then using a Permethrin based dust or spray would be best. I spray my roosting bars/coop housing with Permethrin, but use Sevin to dust my birds - everyone has an opinion on treatments:)

For de-worming - I would use Safeguard (Fenbendazole) or Valbazen (Albendazole). You can find Safeguard at stores like TSC and Valbazen can be ordered online.

If the person trading said she was a Golden Comet, I would be inclined to believe them. She's looks like a production hen to me.
Did they say hold old she was?
OH! Don't forget to make grit (crushed granite) and oyster shell available for her free choice.

And 1 more thing. I hope you find those water and feed stations easier to use than I do. Maybe I have 1 that is wonky. The thing won't stay together 1/2 the time. It's fine since those aren't my main feed/water stations, but good grief, just a pain! haha

🐔 Thanks for all the help! I REALLY appreciate your advice! I did treat her legs last night with some veggie oil and then Vaseline. She was such a sweetheart about it. She let me pick her up and hold her with no fussing at all. She seemed to enjoy the leg rub a lot. I’ll look for the dewormer. I’ve been surprised at how little there is out there for chickens as far as medications and stuff. I do have grit. 😁👍
I don’t know how old she is. Someone gave her to the guy who gave her to me so he didn’t know either. Is there a way to tell? He did say that she’s laying. I don’t know how often.
The little feeder/watered in the pic is just a temporary one. I had used it for my baby chicks but so far it’s working for this hen while she’s in quarantine. I have a big Harris Farms feeder and a Rent-a-coop watered in my ”big coop”. So far I like them both. Had a Grandpa’s Feeder but it was too big for my space so I returned it. Also, just FYI, much much less expensive to buy those from their website and not on Amazon…like a $50 difference! I’ll probably get another one when I get a bigger coop.
