Hello Everyone!
I hope you are all doing well...2020 has been crazy huh? I thank the universe for chickens! They have kept me sane (..well, at least hangin on anyway )
My grandma had chickens, duck & rabbits. So I grew up with chickens, but as an adult I'm brand spankin' new to the "bird life" & I love them so much! I live in the suburbs & I've wanted some hens for some time & 2020 gave me the perfect excuse to blindside my husband with an entire flock of 10 mixed-aged birds after getting his blessing on 3 laying hens ...yes, that's my style, so y'all let me know if I'm "crazy chicken lady material" please.
So like I said, I have 12 chickens total (see how I snuck 2 more in there? Yup, just like that )
So although I had "permission" to get 3 laying hens, I obsessed about having Ayam Cemanis so I purchased 8 hatching eggs from ebay. Those weren't gonna lay right away so I figured I'm still allowed to get the original 3 right?
So I went to a local farm & got 4 hens, I need to work on my math, I know.
Then my eggies were due & only 2 hatched, sadly 1 died. So now I had to get 1-2 new baby chicks to keep my lone baby company.
I found someone selling some OE chicks on CL that were only 2 weeks older & I went & picked up 3 babies. They. Where. Huge! In comparison, then I remembered my ebay Cemani eggs where bantams! Well of course I still bought them because I had already said I would & I don't like wasting people's time, worse case I'll sell them right? HA! NO! I WANT olive eggers.
So now, I have 3 more birds, but still need the babies I was looking for, off to Tractor Supply!...
TS had assorted bantams, perfect! According to Maryland law, I had to buy 4 minimum soooo not my fault right? So this is what I have:
*4 Hyline Brown Hens - 23 weeks - Laying daily
-These where my intended hens, got them from a local farmer.
*3 Olive Egger "teens" - 8 weeks - 1 is a boy
-These were my big ole babies from CL
*5 assorted bantam babies - def got some boys
1. Ayam Cemani (think boy) I hatched 2 & lost 1
2. Polish (silver laced?)
3. Unknown big bird (maybe faverolle? Help)
4. Unknown chipmunk markings as a baby
5. Unknown monarch butterfly wings, won't stop sneezing
So I think that sums up my chicken story thank you all for having me & for helping us all thru this amazing platform
