Hi! I have a chicken with salpingitis that got put on antibiotics. We gave her the first dose tonight, and I struggled for about 20 minutes. After watching about 10 youtube videos (lol) I finally got it. I hate stressing her out, and was wondering if i could soak some mealworms or even bread to make it easier? I can’t imagine doing that twice a day for a week. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

What type of medication are you giving her?
I add liquid dewormer to small pieces of bread. My flock now thinks deworming is great!
I have added the powdered contents of a capsule to chilled coconut oil. One of my girls loved this. The other one who needed the medication hated the coconut oil, but ate her meds mixed into a little bit of wet food.

It is Liquamycin!

I assume you've been trying to syringe. I've done it and found for even the calmest chicken, wrapping them in a towel like a burrito helps.

Soaking in bread works, if it doesn't taste nasty, but if it does and they won't eat it, then you're back to syringing.

Here's a good article how to do it that might help.

I wrapped her in a towel and tried all of the tricks. She’s a difficult one🤣 I’ll probably try bread or mealworms tomorrow.

You know that is an injectable cattle antibiotic that is given once into the back of the neck or into the breast muscle, and if needed, repeated in 3 days? Some do try and use that orally, and that is a pretty small amount to give orally. I would hold her in my arms, pry the beak open and squirt it into her beak. It might get easier the more you give it.

I just don’t want to stress her out too much. I feel bad☹️

Use a syringe without a needle to draw up the liquid.
Cradle the hen in your arm. Grab your pre-loaded syringe with your free hand.
Use your fingers and thumb on your cradling arm to pull down on the hens wattles and her mouth will open.
With your free hand, grab the syringe and squirt the .35 liquid in her mouth and immediately let go of the wattles so the hen can swallow the liquid. Done. Release the hen.
