Hello, my name is Ruth, I’m a Native American homesteader in Lisbon Falls maine. I grew up on a chicken farm in Hiram Maine, in the 70’s and 80’s. We had a flock of well over 200, and chickens were a secondary income for our household. I currently have 13 chickens, but the number fluctuates between a dozen and 16, depending on babies, who I keep, who I trade or sell, and who gets butchered. I only have one rooster, and have no plans to get anymore. Because he’s an old English, and super quiet, I don’t get complaints from the neighbors, and because he’s small, there is little or no domination issues. I love having fresh eggs daily, and share with the local food pantry, if we get too many. I also enjoy making crafts with the feathers, so I have a large variety of colors on hand, and collect dropped feathers from them daily. I have silkies, Wellsummers, old English, Cochins, seabright, Fayoumis, austalorp, whitings true blue, Marans, amaricana,
Barred rock, and brahma. I am disabled and therefore “retired” though I do enjoy doing native crafts. I currently have s service dog, for mobility issues (he’s 147 pounds of sheer love) and he thinks he’s a lap dog. I also have a miniature rabbit, 2 pigeons, and 7 cats (all rescues). My only biological child, passed away in February, due to complications caused by chemotherapy, at the age of 19. I have had over 94 foster kids over the past 35 years, who have come and gone as they needed to, till they got adopted. I’ve found that the “farm” environment can be very enriching to a youngster, whose suffering a loss, and trapped in the system, and helps them open up and become the young adults they were meant to be. I’m really happy to be here, and look forward to learning and sharing with you all, blessings of peace, love and light, always. Ruth “White Wolf Bear” Doughty
