I have been reading through the forums for a week or so. Always had chickens growing up, and my cousin runs a small poultry farm. I live pretty close to town but have 1/4 acre and we plan to get 3-4 hens this spring. I can't wait to teach our boys (5 and 2) about caring for animals and about healthy food (already teach them about it, but now we can take it to the next level!). We also plan to start our vegetable garden this year. Thank you all for your insightful posts!!
 
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I know where you're coming from. We just moved to Montana about 1 1/2 months ago and had to leave our flock behind, so we're looking forward to getting some new pullets ourselves this spring. Raising poultry is a great family hobby and you all will enjoy those fresh eggs! Are you going to get your chickens from your cousin's poultry farm? What breed(s) are you thinking of starting off with?

I am hoping to get one from his farm as he has purebred Americauna's, but since we only want 3 or 4 I would Like to have a few breeds with a variety of egg color. I was thinking 1 plymouth rock, 1 welsummer and maybe 2 Americauna's.
