Appreciate the welcomes. I am in the Brandon area. My pen is made out of chain link, sides and top 14' x 14'. They get the run of the yard (also fenced) during the day and the kids lock them up when they return to the coop at evening. The predator/s were able to get the hens to go to the side of the pen (out of the coop where they were safe inside the pen) and then pull them through. I have added chicken wire and a hot wire now to keep them safer.

Lots of info on here about whether to provide heat for chickens. Honestly, it never gets cold enough in Fla for them to need heat. They tolerate much colder temps than you ever have there. It's heat that they have trouble with. They need breeze and shade in summer, and lots of water to drink. 100 degrees is actually considered the dividing line for lethal temps for them. Many people in this climate have a three sided coop with an attached run. Mine has 4 sides but some parts are hardware cloth rather than walls.

For below freezing, if you ever get there, they do need some high up ventilation so the humid air (from breathing and poop) can escape.
