So a week ago I bought 2 coturnix, a male and a female.(I don't know how old, but I'm pretty sure they're fully grown.) Neither did have any black dots on their chest.
Today I got another female (8 weeks old). Obviously smaller than the other two. She had a small bald area between her head and neck. They started attacking her, holding onto her neck feathers almost like they wanted to climb on her.
my questions :
1- Do all coturnix females have to have black dots? Or does it depend on the type of coturnix (japanese, common, etc.)
2- Why are they attacking her ? Is the male possibly trying to mate with her?
3- No eggs so far, I guess it's because the weather is still too cold ?
4- Can you sex quails from the feathers in the area directly under their eyes ? This area is brown on my male, and black/grey on my females.
5- Is it true that females have lighter colored feathers in their upper chest ? That's what the vendor told me.

some more info :
I put them in a 3ftx3ftx3ft concrete chamber, and I have a 100watt light bulb which automatically turns itself on for 12 hours at night to help them stay warm.
They have been eating and drinking well.
Thanks :)

Thanks :)
btw, it's between 50 and 75 degrees (10-25 Celsius) outside. It's most likely a little warmer inside the chamber.

Sounds like you have 2 males and 1 female... the aggressive grabbing the feathers on the head is breeding... you need more females or they will pluck her to death. The hen is being over breed... that means stress and she wont lay eggs... takes about a month or two to get comfortable in a new environment when they are grown up too... so you wont see eggs for a while probably. You need to post pictures for us to find out what kind of quail youhave..

I posted pics but my post has to be approved by moderators... So I'm waiting.

welcome byc! It looks like you have all males they all have red breast no black dot and streaks like a female SHOULD have. i beleive the bald neck 1 is a lower ranking male than the other 2 males and is getting picked on and can be possibly killed. best bet is to seperate the one thats getting picked on for a week and see if its gets healthier and looks like the other 2. then watch the last 2 to see if 1 gets lower ranked in that week and ends up like the bald neck 1 just what id do and another thing keep fresh water and feed a clean pen and plenty of room to run and keep them occupied instead of beating on each other, itll help alot with there qualitys. i got 8 straight run pharoah quail in january and i was lucky to have 1 male and 7 females, waiting on eggs!

I see males. If they have the rusty red color on them its a male... I personally would put each one in a different cage by its self. They will fight for dominance. Then when you get some females give each male 3 or so hens.... if you dont want that many birds... kill a male or two and grill em up! Then put a few hens with the one male you have left..

But yeah... you go males.

I spent like 5 hours reading about quail. But what confused me was that the vendor claimed that he gave me a female. I assumed that not all coturnix females have dots on their chests.
