New HERE:) New to chickens and 1 timer to raising them.

Living here in MICHIGAN. It still really cold an am waiting until it gets warmer to pick up the chicks.



Looking to get opinions to what breed are best for 1 timers and for Children?

I was thinking Speckled Sussex and Barred Rocks?

eggs laying hens only no roosters

Opinions?

Only having 5 x pet bantams who spend more time broody than they do laying eggs, I am not able to provide any sound advice on good with children, egg laying hens. However, I am sure that other greeters will be able to help.

! Great to have you in our flock! You ask a question that has a lot of answers depending upon who you ask. The two breeds you mentioned are indeed great birds but there are lots of others that are friendly and good egg layers....Rhode Island Reds, Delawares, Rocks, Red Stars, etc., etc. You might check out the Breeds Forum below and do a little research: https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds For what it's worth, I'd stay away from the Mediterranean Class birds - leghorns and the like, as they are kind of flighty and skittish. I would personaly choose salmon faverolles they are very friendly and an excellent egg layer and setter.
