I purchased my first chicks yesterday. Sort of confusing, as they were listed as Rainbows in the store (TSC), marked as pullets in the box, and the receipt marked them as something else.

Friends say they look like Barred Rocks, and they do from pictures I've seen online.

Any clue if that's right? And if so...any guesses as to the sex? They were marked as pullets, but I'm nervous about that.

I labeled each picture and attached face, wing, leg, head.

Straight comb, barring, yellow skin, no leg feathers... I'mma say Plymouth Barred Rocks.

Even rate of feathering (in many breeds, the males will feather out more slowly, or more quickly than the females; Barred Rocks are slow-feathering, so the males feather out much more slowly) so they're probably all one sex.

I'm seeing dark legs and small headspots. (The barring gene restricts pigment. Males carry two copies = less pigment = more white) and not much white on the feathers. I'd say you have females.

EDT: If I'm iffy about any of them, it's #1 and #6. Please don't take pictures in front of heat lamps. That makes it hard to tell colour.

Thanks! And yes, some of those pics are truly bad bc of the lamp. We started moving away from it to take the rest of the pics.

I am hoping you're right that they're all pullets, but I also worry you're right that 1 & 6 could be roos. 😬

Good news! I went back to TSC and took a picture of the box they came in (same employees not there so could not help). I called the hatchery (Estes), and they said it was BR pullets, so whew!!
