I am in Southern Oregon.
I have had chickens on and off most of my life. Right now we have 13 chicks of mixed bred, supposedly Phoenix and Buff Orpington, 1 sexlink, 3 road island red hens, road island red rooster, one buff hen and a buff rooster. We did have 9 hens that were buffs and road island reds and one rock and a beautiful huge rooster. Sadly the horse opened the chicken coop. She actually managed to open the latch to get to the grain in the coop. All that was left was 3 reds and the sexlink. I'm out of state helping take care of my father who is in hospice and was heart broken - just more than I could handle. My husband fixed the door so it could never happen again then picked up the 13 chicks from a woman who was selling them and she gave him the roadie rooster and buff rooster. Big beautiful boys.
When he first brought them home the buff rooster, and 2 chicks escaped and spent 3 nights roosting in the trees. Amazing they survived. Dang horse threw open the door while my husband was letting them go in the coop. She is way too smart. Finally caught them and they are safe in the coop. Eventually they will all be free range as soon as everyone is used to their new home.
We do not eat our chickens, even when they stop laying. And it appears that we are now taking in roosters that need a home. My husband who had always joked about eating my chickens is now been bit by the chicken bug. His Facebook photo is a selfie with him and the buff rooster. As for the new chicks we are totally baffled as to what one of them is.
As I have been writing this we have acquired one more very young road island red. Lots of people are desperate to find good homes for their roosters. If we can keep that crazy retired (rescue) racehorse under control, everyone should be fine. She's a sweet girl, you could have a tea party under her belly, but a greedy ol' girl.
So, anyone got an idea what this pretty baby is? Not even sure of the sex.
