Got our first chickens this past April as 2 day old chicks. We have 6 (the maximum allowed by out town). Originally we were told they were 3 Buff Orpington, 1 Black Australorp and 2 barred rock.

One barred rock turned out to be a male Easter egger, and the australorp was a male also. We swapped them at the store where we purchased them for an Easter egger and a blue maran.

Loving having these so far, 2 of the buffs are laying-anxiously waiting for the others to start!
 
Congratulations on winning against town hall and on being part of the wonderful world of chickens. How fortunate that the store allowed you to swap roos for hens.

When I needed to add more duck hens, one of the three ducklings turned out to be a drake and my breeder (from whom I've always gotten all of my ducks) offered to let me trade Layne in for a female. But, by the time he was old enough to be an obvious drake, I couldn't bring myself to send him packing.
