Hi, whichever breed you get, teach the kiddos how to handle the birds safely (and wash hands afterwards) and spend lots of time with the flock so they are used to being around people. Good luck!

I would personally recommend the larger breeds, they tend to be less flighty (although most of their temperament depends on the individual bird).
I'd recommend breeds like Orpington's or Jersey Giants. I agree with Debbie292d, Silkies are good breeds but don't lay that many eggs.

They lay almost as many, it's just that they are broody so often, it subtracts some from their yearly quota lol.

Actually, they lay about 5 days out of 7, sometimes 6 out of 7; whereas the usual layers are 6 out of 7 minimally, having 7 out of 7 often.
