I've read backyard chickens before but decided to sign up....
We(mostly my husband) started with 10 chickens last year, sadly we've lost all but 5 and I fear we will lose the rest. My husband has to take a trip in a few days and has had a hard time finding someone to care for the animals(cats, dog and chickens). We're separated and I don't live nearby.
Anyway, thought I'd introduce myself. His problem has been with human predators but I'll save that for another thread. A long story....
The chickens we got were plymouth rocks and I've read there are a million chicken breeds....

Welcome To BYC and Happy Holidays! Human predators are the worst, good luck on getting that resolved. Feathersite has pictures of what seems like million different breeds ...
