This is my first post. We brought our first three hens home yesterday. I am fortunate to have a good friend who owns a family farm with plenty of chickens, and they sold us three laying hens. I'm not sure the breeds and imagine they are more "mutts" than anything else. But, we are excited and hope the girls start laying eggs soon. We have them in a chicken tractor in our yard, and they seem to be getting adjusted just fine.

Welcome to BYC!

Congrats on the new hens! They may take a break from laying til they get settled into their new home. It is always best to lock them in the coop for a couple days so they know where home is. Keep fake eggs in the nest boxes so they know where you want to them to lay.

Enjoy your new flock and I hope the eggs start coming soon!

Welcome and who Cares if they are mutts? I bet they are beautiful! Will u post some pics? I love looking at chickens. In fact I'm going to see some chicks today ;) I'm sure I will bring home 1 or 2 or 3...♡

If those are mutts then they "look like" a buff orphington in the back on the right, a road island red in front and the white is a leghorn.

Nice looking birds.
Yeah you can buy ceramic eggs, easter eggs, or just golf balls in the nest. I used golf balls because I have them. They serve a few purposes. One the hens will recognize its an egg and follow suit meaning "that's the place to lay eggs". The other is if they do peck at the fake eggs they don't get any yummy egg insides so they don't try eating eggs that are real.
Chickens will sample most anything. If an egg breaks being laid they may sample the egg goo and start going after eggs. Cannibals! It could also mean they have a nutrition deficiency.

Mine do think the golf balls are eggs because they move them around (sometimes to a different nest) just like they were eggs. Funny huh. "Who laid the dimpled eggs?"

Thank you for the tips. The red one is pretty friendly...she pecked pellets out of my hand this morning and let me peck her beak on the waterer. The other two are pretty timid still. I took the pan of water out. We shall see. I will try the golf ball trick! :) their names are Henrietta, Isadora, and Clementine. Lol

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Cute little flock, like their names! X2 on the White Leghorn and Buff Orpington, with the lighter colored tail and hackle feathers would vote the red is a Red Sex Link (Red Star, Golden Comet, ISA Brown etc, different names depending on the hatchery).
Be sure to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping you'll find helpful. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Whatever you do don't let the chickens see you drive golf balls. They won't lay another egg again for you.

There's your lame joke for the day.

Just watch them with the nipple waterer. It may take awhile before they figure it out and if need be put a regular waterer back in. You may have to show them and try again several times.

Anyone want to bet when the flock will expand? Have fun Jamie
