Soooo....since the red one is more tame than the others, I was able to guide her over to the waterer and push her beak against it a few times. Within an hour all three were drinking from it! Success. Also, found three eggs today....a brown and beige one in the nestbox and a white one in the middle of the grass. haha. I did put some plastic golf balls in the boxes so hopefully whoever laid the white egg will get the hint.

:) Excited that it's going so well so far.

Welcome to BYC. The eggs laid today were 'in process' when you brought the hens home. Frequently hens will lay an egg or two in their new homes and then go on break for a bit as they adjust to their new environment. This is perfectly normal.

The white egg layer was the leghorn. I've heard you can tell the color of the egg by looking at the color of the feathers over the chickens ears. Have no idea if it's true or not but you can look up all kinds of info on the different breeds you have and maybe check out your future additions. I want some easter eggers. Or an olive egger so I can have green eggs and ham sam I am.

I had just thought of this since your new to raising chickens but you can save your egg shells when you eat the eggs to crush up and let your gals eat them to replenish the calcium they used to make them. I use a large hominy can that I put my shells in and then crush them to little bits in the can with a metal rod. You can mix in the crushed egg shells into yummy stuff so they eat it. Just make sure you mash it up so they can't tell what it was. Don't want them thinking "hey that egg I laid looks like that yummy stuff she feeds me."

Have fun.

You have some smart hens.- nipple waterers keep it free of litter and yuck and no more spilled water bowls- a real blessing
