Hello everyone. I am new to this site and fairly new to chicken raising. I mean I have been around them in some way or another my whole life but didn't really bother with them. Recently I acquired some chickens to start getting eggs and more importantly as a stress relief and would love to learn more about them. I know their age and breed but that's about it for most of them. Please help! Breda Fowl age 7 months rooster & 2 hens, Bantam momma with 6 chicks 11 weeks, 4 Buff Orpingtons age 4 months sex unknown, 1 Buff Orpington/Blue Samatrun cross age 4 month sex unknown, Breda Fowl age 4 months sex unknown. How do I tell the sex? When should they start laying? When will momma ween chicks? HELP!!!!!

Watch for large combs and wattles, pointy hackle, saddle and sickle feathers, behavior changes and of course crowing. These all indicate male.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Most standard breeds start laying somewhere between 5 and 7 months. When the combs, faces and wattles are bright red and the birds squat for you when you lean over them, the eggs should be coming down the pipes soon!

Your hen must be "broody of the year," to keep her chicks around at 11 weeks old. Most broodies, kick the kids to the curb much sooner. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Hello and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good links and suggestions above. If all your birds are from different places, and momma hen and the chicks came together, she may never wean/ leave them them as she normally would in her own flock, she and the chicks will probably stick together in the new flock as they are familiar to each other.
