Hi! That's really strange that you can't buy a small number in person. I agree, the car ride would have been less stressful for them. I have two Delaware hens -- they're quite friendly and good layers. I've been eyeing the Dominiques and the Barnvelders, but I have to restrain myself. We already have 15 coming in April! Maybe in a couple years I'll get to try these breeds too!
 
Hatching eggs are another thing that does MUCH better if gotten locally. Otherwise the post office seems to play dodge ball with the boxes. In general shipped eggs usually are not as viable as locally purchased fertile eggs.
