The North-Eastern Corner of Maryland
I have found two of these holes in the last two weeks. The pic is a bit deceiving, in that it looks like the hole goes straight down, but it's really going sideways into a small rise before it goes down. It's in a mini-run that we really haven't used much this winter. It's about five feet square - the sandbox under an old children's play fort. The hole is nearly dead-centered in the square. It was perfectly round and open until I got "assistance" from my dog, who knocked the debris into the center. We (including the dog!) have found two small garter (aka garden) snakes in the yard, but both looked too small to make this hole. That's a US quarter for scale. We live in Northeastern Maryland.
Any ideas? Please?

ps - I tried to add the picture, but it didn't "take" the first time - I hope it works now!

I think it is a mouse. I have the same thing here. Get poison and put it down the hole check every day for 4 days to make sure there is poison in that hole that is what I did. It usually takes 3 days to start acting on the mouse Good luck
