Hey all,
We're closing on a property in Shingle Springs zoned R1 on 1.5 acres. We're looking forward to working the land and raising some chickens and goats. I've searched the county planning site and didn't see any restrictions.

If you know any thing about El Dorado County CA panning restrictions on chickens and goats, I'd love to hear from you.

As an additional note - any suggestions on what variety of chicken is recommended for egg production?

Looking forward to contributing and hearing from everyone.

Thanks

David and Julie

There are many great layers chickens, I personally keep Barr Rock. It helps to determine how you are going to raise them first. Are they going to stay in their coop and run? Are you going to free range? Some breeds do better then others. Also ask your state thread, they can give you info about what breeds do best in your weather.

Welcome to BYC, Dave and Julie. Glad you decided to join our flock. If sheer egg production is your main priority, the best layers in the chicken world are White Leghorns (for white eggs) and Sex Links (for brown eggs). These are the birds used by laying houses as they are laying machines, consistently churning out more than 300 large eggs per hen per year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Thanks for the welcomes and advice! I'll be building a covered coop with area for roaming. Probably not "free range" because of our coyote population.
I'll contact my local area thread for specifics!
