Hi, one of my nicknames is Rose. I was raised in my younger years by my grandparents and at one point my grandpa and I raised about two dozen chickens. Now that I'm done with my schooling, married, and moved back to my farm I'm wanting to bring back chickens and goats. I also want to get the guinea Pawpa always wanted, and perhaps rabbits as well.

Right now, I have six ~1 week old chicks in a guinea pig cage. Having chicks is a whole new experience, we always bought ours as adults; all mutts. Thanks to reading many, many, forums on this website and a couple other pages the Rhode Island Reds I bought really are RIRs, and the "Araucana-Ameraucana Strain" chicks are Easter Eggers like I hoped, possibly Olive Eggers with a lot of Welsummer in them. Oh, supposedly all of mine were meant to be pullets, but also thanks to you guys, I'm thinking I may have gotten one roo of each breed and if that's the case I'm fine with it. However, I am by no means ready to attempt to hatch eggs so one of my girls better decide to be broody if she wants to see her offspring.

I know I'm terrible at intros, I foretold you, I would rather strike up a conversation and learn about someone than merely spew verbal vomit in two to three paragraphs. So get to know me if you want I'm pretty laid back and easy going for the most part.

Welcome to BYC, Rose. Glad you decided join our flock. Your intro is just fine. No one is worse at rambling on than I am. I much prefer wordy intros to those members whose intros are just one or two words or even a single sentence, and we get quite a few of those. With your intro, I actually learned some things about you. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Nice to meet your Rose. Your intro is fine. The chicks will probably outgrow the hamster cage pretty fast. Do you have a heat lamp over the cage for them? You may want to go to "Raising Backyard chickens," forum - there is a menu that opens to the right - raising backyard chicks, which should help you out. Welcome to the flock

Hi :welcome Rose

Glad you could join the flock! I agree I think your intro is super and have loved reading through yours. Getting to know a little about your background is great for other members to get to know you. I too use a guinea cage for brooding for the first week or so. But they do grow out of it very quick and have to move out to the brooding shed. I like the guinea cage for the house so I can look at them all the time!! I've now resorted to sitting in the shed with them!!
Oops I've gone off now rambling about chicks!! I love raising them it's so much fun and very rewarding.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your chicks and hope you enjoy BYC I am sure you will everyone here to help and very friendly :frow

Wow, thank you all for such a great welcome! As far as the chick rambling, I'd love to listen to your rambling. No, I hadn't found the other animal forums yet; I joined BYC because every time I had a question for Google, Google brought me here to where someone else had the exact same question and everyone seemed to know what they were talking about and I could verify their answers with other research. I haven't started searching for info on the other animals I want yet.
Yes, I have a heat lamp for the chicks. My husband and I are keeping it at 90* on one side because the first night we got them and set up they sprawled out panting at 95 and they seemed to like 92 for the first couple of nights. On Tuesday I'm going to move it back to 85 and see if they try to huddle together cold or not.
I'm going to get off here now. I'm cleaning out the shed so they can be moved out there soon but I took a break for lunch and decided to see if I had any replies.

Ramble away - we here at BYC can listen to people "talk chicken" all day long, lol...........heck, there's plenty of non-chicken related rambling that goes on around here. Where in Indiana are you?
