I helped my parents with chickens when I was little, and have always wanted to get some of my own. But the township where my husband and I moved to didn't allow backyard chickens. Until now.... :) Their new ordinance just passed yesterday, and will be published by July, when it takes effect. I'm so excited! I have a little A-frame chicken coop ready to go, and plan on starting with 3 chickens. I'm thinking of getting buff orpingtons.

We're a large family, with six kids, and I can't wait to have some hens in our back yard finally!

Congratulations on the changing of your ordinance! Buff Orpingtons are very sweet birds and would be a great choice for a family with children.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Congratulations on being able to have chickens. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children, and Buff Orpingtons are a great breed for children as they are friendly and gentle. My children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) made lap pets of our BOs. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your Buff Orpingtons.

You picked a good breed, buff orps are beautiful, generally laid back and docile. Some of the hens also go broody - which means they decide to sit and hatch out chicks. Of course if you don't have a rooster they won't have fertile eggs. But you could buy "fertile" eggs of any breed and put under them .

Welcome to Backyard chickens, hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.
Yay! I'm so happy to hear your laws have changed and you can keep chickens now!

I would HIGHLY recommend buff orpingtons for you and your family. They are docile, affectionate, friendly, great layers, cold and heat hardy, good in confinement as well as free range. They are my favorite breed and I love them!
