Hello, I am Peggy from Indiana. I have just decided to raise chickens in our families back yard and am new to the whole thing. I am married with five children, three dogs, two cats, and assorted other indoor pets. I live in town but have a little land and would like to have a few 2 or 3 hens so that we can raise and collect our own eggs. Any help on the best breeds would be great.

Thank You
Peggy

from Ohio. So glad you joined in. There are so many breeds out there, it all depends on what you are looking for. Not to mention there are bantams and standards to choose from. Good Luck.

Hi Peggy! Welcome form SW Indiana! The RIR, BR, BA, BO, and BSL are all cold hardy and docile. The BO's tend to go broody often though. You might want to consider starting with 6 instead of 2-3 just in case you lose any to predators or other causes. That way you can give the extras to your family or friends. I've lost 5 in the past year to unknown causes and you don't want to be without eggs and start all over. Just a thought!
