I have a friend telling me to look into australorps but I was thinking maybe bantams. I want something good for eggs but also eventually meat. Might not be common consensus but they will not be pets if that makes sense.

Bantam's won't have much meat on them. There are some good dual-purpose breed's out there that can provide both of those for you. Yes, it does make sense to me. I have some good one's for both.
