Hello everyone!
I'm a new member living in Downeast Maine, looking forward to getting to know the forums here.
I last had chickens in 2005 - had a nice little backyard flock that we sadly had to rehome when the owner of the place we rented decided to sell. I decided no more chickens till we owned a place. Now we have a big house on just over an acre and are looking forward to a new flock!
I've ordered chickens from McMurray - planning on getting dark and light Brahmas, Barred Rocks, and buff Orpingtons. I ordered straight run dark brahmas, so hopefully will get a roo in amongst those. I wanted big, cold-hardy chickens that are good pets, with egg laying a nice side bonus.
We'll be converting one of the stalls in our 19th century barn into a coop, so I may be looking for advice there. I'm still debating whether to let the flock free range or to try to create an enclosure. We won't get the chicks till late May so I have lots of time to decide - they won't be going out till July and will certainly be kept penned while crazy teens. Our property borders a brook, and I know we have wildlife that comes through, so will have to see how I feel about the rooster as protector.
