Hello all! I am so thrilled to have found this site as we are planning our first foray into having chickens this spring. We desire our own eggs and the pet benefits of having a small flock of 5-8. We are not on a farm but in a small neighborhood on less than a third of an acre. I am slowly making it a small homestead for us and our girls will spend free range time in the garden so I do know I risk them taking much of what I plant for us to eat but hope to plant extra to compensate for that.

I look forward to learning from veterans here as to what some of the best breeds are for us. We don't want any aggressive birds or fliers. Even considering maybe adding a small few meat birds but have concerns about their breeding so...

Thanks for all the coming welcomes and advice-

! Great to have you in our community! Best of luck with your spring chickens!

Some popular breeds:
Buff Orpington
Barred rock
Australorp
Easter Egger
Leghorn
Rhode Island Red
That's just a few. I am definitely not a veteran.
Good luck and
WELCOME!!

When speaking in chicken terms, what does "flighty" mean? Same as any other time the term is used or something different?
