New in Michigan and where to locate the coop

The problem with the coop in the barn would be daylight in the winter, which is precious enough.

I like to keep the chickens in the coop, which is a section of the barn in my case. They have their own entrance, window for light and are kept from roaming the barn. Two reasons. Poop and I don't like egg hunts.

from Ohio. So glad you joined. We turn our barn into a coop. It used to house lambs that my DD showed. The DH put in some roosts and built some nest boxes for them as well. We added a couple more windows and it works great.

I don't think there is a problem having goats and chickens near one another, although you don't want them roosting above where the goats eat & sleep. I have heard that you don't want pigs and chickens raised together due to either some virus, bacteria or ?????

My chickens love to go into the goat shelter (which is open) and dig and dust bathe in the hay the goats leave behind.

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome. I picked up new chicks on Weds. Three Australorps, three black sex-links, and six guineas. So if all of the chickens survive, I will have 8 laying hens, and the guineas are more for fun than for anything else.
