Looking forward to getting to know you all!
____________
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Very new. We don't have any yet, but are hoping to soon. Very excited, but a bit nervous, too. Everyone says chickens are so easy to care for, but there's so much to know and so many questions...the brooder has to be just so, the coop has to be just right, what if we get the wrong breed for our area, what if they all get heat stroke in the summer, what if they freeze in the winter, what if they all get bird flu...
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None at the moment, but hope to start with around eight.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Again, none at the moment. We'd like to have black australorps, but I've ready conflicting things about climate and temperment.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google search
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I crochet (baby clothes, wool diaper covers, whatever the family needs), machine knit (mostly sweaters, skirts, and afghans), and sew (diapers, soft soled leather shoes, clothes for the family).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a stay-at-home mom of three, soon to be four. We're mildly famous among friends for having our kids two years apart, almost to the day. Madylin will be 6 this August 29, Noah will be 4 on August 28, Ruby will be 2 on August 24, and #4 is due on Noah's birthday. They've also been born (so far) within a 2 1/2-hr window in the afternoon. They've all been born naturally (completely drug-free), with two born in water, and one born at home, and all have breastfed for at least a year. Most people in town know where we live because we're the only ones with diapers on the clothesline when it's sunny out. We also have two very spoiled indoor cats, Abby (a purebred Ragdoll) and Scooter (an adopted stray).
I'm a Plain Catholic, which for me includes things like fulltime hair covering, no pants, and long sleeves and ankle-length skirts year-round. We're moving the kids toward Plain dress, although it's difficult to find modest clothes for children and what's out there tends to be pretty expensive. My husband does not dress Plain, but is completely supportive of me. As part of Plain living, we're trying to find ways of being more self-sufficient and using less of the things that we can't produce ourselves. Our current project is an indoor (actually in the garage), ceiling mount clothesline.
