What did you do in the garden today?

.5 oz of sage harvested today, .9 oz of tarragon, I thought I measured the kale I harvested too but I guess not. 🤔😅 Didn’t get to the lettuce before the heat hit.

I also saved back the ends of some of the tarragon stems for an experiment; I buried the ends of two branches in damp soil and then did the same with two more that I had dipped in rooting hormone, to see if any of them get roots. I’ve tried rooting tarragon with plain water in previous years and it always rots, we’ll see if this works better.

I watered one of the gardens today with the hose. I'll do the other one tomorrow.

I have to say, the beans I planted came up VERY fast. I soaked the soil, put on some compost, soaked that, planted the beans, and watered the row again. The soil was plenty warm, so I bet that helped.

I have killed a few potato beetles every day. Today I saw a small patch of their bright orange eggs on the underside of a leaf. First time I've seen eggs. So obviously I didn't get them all. I'll be bug hunting every day now. The Japanese beetles will be out in 2-3 weeks.

Can you say, chickie snack?

I have 10 New England Aster plants which will bloom at the summer's end. I think I might have some seedling volunteers, which would be wonderful! I tried to grow them from seed, but nothing came up. The seeds were labeled "pre-stratified," so I had hopes for something.

I bought the plants for the honeybees. I think the flowers are pretty.

So, a broody hen at about 15 days in decided to get off the eggs today for an extended period of time, she had taken breaks before but not this long. After her jaunt and dustbath outside she planted herself in the coop, by herself, on a roost for several hours. The temp outside was mid 90’s. She just recently went back on the eggs after at least several hours off egg. Any thoughts on what to make of this?
She's fine. Sure the eggs are fine too. It's HOT out. I think broodies have a very strong internal thermometer. When they cool down, they know it's time to go back to the eggs as they have cooled too.

In my country (Netherlands) they sell flowers labelled as being good for bees, but they have often too much poison to be healthy for bees.
So they are only good for bees in theory.

There was a lot of criticism about tgese bee unfriendly plants, it helped partially for plants sold within the country. Unfortunately the export to others countries demands the flowers/plants are completely bug free. So the flower growers keep using too much poisons.
