New in Texas

A swamp cooler is a mister with a fan. It's basically works like a toilet with a squirrel cage fan. (gross, but true) That may work in arid places, but it's too humid for that in NE Texas. Too much humidity will make the coop rot. I had a swamp cooler on my house in Clovis, NM 25 years ago. They are easy to work on and use very little electricity, but it only works in arid climates. Arizona or SW Texas may be perfect. A swamp cooler also requires a water line.

My husband works a job outside, and they use a swamp cooler to help cool off. It works here, but it's a very big one. I wouldn't be putting a swamp cooler *in* my coop, but rather, outside, the way my husbands work has theirs setup! :) It's very, very humid here. I think it may depend on how you have it setup too - the outside ones that work in sheltered areas do okay if you don't put it in your coop.

However, a small AC unit in a small coop would probably be the most ideal in places with humidity+heat.

I started construction yesterday. I'll take pictures before I cover up the innards. Right now, it's just a frame with wheels. I'll probably spend a month on it in my spare time fine tuning the water and feed systems, wiring the electrical, and making all of the access doors and nesting buckets. My boys are interested and helping. I may get my wife to paint it so she feels like part of the process. My dad is having knee problems, so I may not get much help from him. I'll get advice from him to make sure the fit and finish is good and I build it right so that it sheds water properly and doesn't rot.
