We've been working out logistics for adding chickens to go with our garden here in town and are just about to take the plunge. I've got one daughter researching layers, and since the Tulsa ordinances don't restrict additional chicks we're thinking of rotating a dozen for meat birds every couple months. Yes, we've got plenty of room. It's one of those lots where the city didn't put in a street so the yard's a block long from front curb to back fence.

Has anyone in town, in Tulsa Oklahoma, had problems with the city keeping this many? I was bemoaning the expense of screening a whole run, maybe modifying a hoop house plan. UGH!! Upon re-re-re-reading the ordnance, it seems that the relevant direction says: "kept in a building which at its nearest point is no closer than fifty (50) feet ... shall be screened to prevent the spread of disease by flies..." Upon reflection, my family is kept in the house, but doesn't spend all, or much, of their days inside it. Likewise, the dog has hers. So, screened "house" and open run?

Hi, welcome to BYC! I hope you find everything you need.

If I were you I'd post my question in an Oklahoma thread.

Hello from Oregon & welcome to BYC :) If you have questions about your cities ordnance you should call them - sometimes the way its written can perceived in a few ways. Best of luck.

Glad you joined, and feel free to ask any questions you may have!

In my experiance, calling the government to ask permission of anything unusual is generally met with a "no"; not to mention putting yourself on their radar. Various podcasts agree:Urban Chicken, The Chicken Whisperer Online, Chicken Thistle Farm CoopCast. I'm considering a membership with the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund just on principal and to support their work.

Nice to meet you Dave, wish I could clarify what those restrictions mean but, I'll be darned if I know? I think you should post on your state thread and specifically ask for feedback. I'm certain there are chicken folks in Tulsa, I don't think screening would be an affective deterrent . You have to open a door and flies would still get in.
