Hey everyone! Former sheep farmer here and i am interested in getting a few chickens. I had to walk away from the clearance chickens at tractor supply today just because my luck they would be all roosters. I can by from local breeders in the area and would prefer just hens. I do have 4 dogs so obviously i need to build a run thats dog proof. Any breed recommendations. I live in hudson valley NY and winters do get cold.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to BYC and congrats on your new hobby.
I’d suggest getting a variety of breeds - you will soon find those breeds that suit both you and your climate best.

Here are some links to key resources:

Generally, birds with smaller combs and wattles do better in extreme cold; we certainly get our share of windy and frigid weather here in northern Iowa. I understand Buckeyes are supposed to do really well in winter, and I picked up three chicks this spring so I'm hoping that's true.

My best layers over the winter were my Sapphire Gems (who lay large eggs) and one of my Salmon Faverolles (medium-sized eggs). Both breeds handled winter well, the Gems were less reluctant to leave the coop in the morning.

In terms of temperament, the Favs are the friendliest of the (too) many breeds I have. Plus, they are on the smaller side, and with their feathery feet and muffs, they are just plain adorably cute. They not only let me pick them up, but they get along with all the other chickens. Love 'em!

Easter eggers and black austrolorps are both good egg layers and meat birds if you wanna go that way. Rhode island reds are also good egg layers to (dont own any myself anymore though)
